PRESTUDY: 〜をo 〜ますmasu

What Do You Eat, Drink, Read?

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this lesson, you will learn how to:
• Pattern A: [noun]をo [verb]ますmasu — say what you do, ask, and say what you don't
• Pattern B: [noun]をo [verb]ませんかmasenka? — invite someone ("Shall we…?")

THE BIG IDEA: をo MARKS THE THING

English Explanation

In English we say "I eat rice." The word rice is the thing we are acting on.

In Japanese, you mark that thing with the particle をo (pronounced "o").

• ごはんgohanをoたべますtabemasu。 — I eat rice.

• コーヒーkōhīをoのみますnomimasu。 — I drink coffee.

Quick Rule

Put the thing first, then をo, then the verb.

Japanese verbs come at the end of the sentence.

PATTERN A: 〜をo 〜ますmasu

I do / Do you…? / I don't

Pattern: [noun]をo [verb]ますmasu。

Three endings, one pattern

• 〜ますmasu — I do it (positive)

• 〜ますかmasuka? — Do you…? (question — just add かka)

• 〜ませんmasen — I don't (negative)

EXAMPLES

• ごはんgohanをoたべますtabemasu。
I eat rice.

• コーヒーkōhīをoのみますnomimasuかka?
Do you drink coffee?

• テレビterebiをoみませんmimasen。
I don't watch TV.

• ほんhonをoよみますyomimasuかka?
Do you read books?

• おんがくongakuをoききますkikimasu。
I listen to music.

PATTERN B: 〜ませんかmasenka?

Shall we…? / Would you like…?

Pattern: [noun]をo [verb]ませんかmasenka?

How to use

You already know 〜ませんmasen means "I don't…" (from Pattern A).

When you add かka to the end, it becomes a friendly invitation — like "Shall we…?" or "Would you like to…?"

Same ending, but a totally different feeling — it's a warm offer, not a "no"!

COMPARE: 〜ませんmasen vs 〜ませんかmasenka?

〜ませんmasen (negative) 〜ませんかmasenka? (invitation)
コーヒーkōhīをoのみませんnomimasen。
I don't drink coffee.
コーヒーkōhīをoのみませんかnomimasenka?
