Introductions & Occupations

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this lesson, you will learn how to:
• Introduce yourself (name and occupation)
• Describe other people
• Say where someone is from
• Use the word ですdesu ("am / is / are")

WHAT IS ですdesu?

English Explanation

ですdesu is one of the most important words in Japanese. It works like "am," "is," or "are" in English.

Unlike English, ですdesu always comes at the end of the sentence.

It does not change form — whether you say "I am," "she is," or "they are," the word is always ですdesu.

HOW JAPANESE SENTENCES WORK

Word Order

English: I am a student.

Japanese: わたしwatashi はwa がくせいgakusei ですdesu。

The particle はwa marks the topic — it tells the listener who or what you are talking about. Think of it as "As for ___."

Note: はwa is written with the character "ha" but pronounced "wa" when used as a particle.

PATTERN 1: IDENTITY

"I am a ___."

Pattern: [Person] はwa [noun] ですdesu。

How to use

Use this pattern to say who someone is — their name, job, or role.

Replace [Person] with the subject and [noun] with their identity.

EXAMPLES

• わたしwatashiはwa がくせいgakuseiですdesu。
I am a student.

• あなたanataはwa せんせいsenseiですdesu。
You are a teacher.

• かれkare/かのじょkanojoはwa いしゃishaですdesu。
